The story revolves around the careers of these three women who were among pioneers of the early space program. It gives equal importance to all the three main characters and their personal lives are also depicted to give flesh and life to the characters. Katherine and Dorothy are brilliant mathematicians and Mary is one of the early women engineers in American history. They begin their careers as colored computers in the West Wing and then proceed to play leading roles in their respective fields.
In spite of the various struggles they have to undergo because of their race and gender, they never give up and pave the path for various other colored individuals especially women to pursue careers in NASA. They also manage to gain the respect and support of many of their peers and supervisors because of their immense contribution and knowledge in their respective fields.
They work on the first American space program of sending a man to space as well as to the moon. Their work is initially not acknowledged but later they receive their due credit. Although racism is quite strong in America in the 60s, they still manage to stand their ground and pursue their education and career.

Their role in sending John Glenn as the first American in space and in the Apollo 11 mission is described in the movie. They faced opposition and disdain initially but once their contribution was deemed not just important but crucial, they were respected and also allowed to work their way to the top in NASA.

All the three women are depicted as bold, brave and beautiful in their ability to achieve their dreams as well as diligent in their love for the motherland. Katherine has a great love for Mathematics right from her childhood whereas Dorothy works her way to being indispensable even when her department’s existence in the future was threatened by the digital computers. Mary believes that it is not just important to fight against racism physically but in every small way possible by making it possible for ‘colored people’ (as the African-American people were called in those days) to gain higher education and better career options.
They are working women with families. Their children and domestic lives are also depicted in the movie. The strong support they receive from their respective families and also at NASA help them to make a mark in history and in the field of science.
